HIGH SCHOOL SURFERS INTERESTED IN TRYING OUT FOR VARSITY (including returning surfers):
Your coaches will be holding tryouts at 6:30 am on either Saturday, August 28th or Sunday, August 29th. Coach Jason will make the call by Monday the 23rd and we’ll let you know which day the tryout will take place based on the forecast. We’ll announce a tentative location, but that may shift as we get closer to the the day pending conditions. Please note that the tryout will start promptly at 6:30am. Please plan to arrive early enough so you are in your wetsuit and on the beach ready to surf at 6:30am. Details as to exactly how the tryout will run will be coming soon.
NOTE: Whether or not you make the Varsity roster will not determine if you will or won’t surf in the SCSSL contests. Your coaches will detail exactly how they will build their contest rosters at your first practice.
ALL MIDDLE SCHOOL SURFERS:
Your coaches will be holding a surf skills assessment on either Saturday, August 28th or Sunday, August 29th at 9:30am. Coach Thomas will follow the high school team’s lead and select which day the assessment will take place by Monday the 23rd based on the forecast, as well as a tentative location (subject to change based on conditions).
NOTE: The middle school assessment is not a tryout and all water-safe surfers will make the team (please review the Member Guidelines and Surf Team Requirements that you signed upon registration). The assessment is simply an opportunity for the coaches to get a sense of where everyone is in their surfing so they can separate the groups appropriately.
For those of you surfing with our club for the first time, our coaches like to say that surfing is not like soccer, baseball or basketball, and we have to be flexible with our scheduling pending conditions. While your coaches will try to give you as much notice as possible regarding when/where practices will take place throughout the season, be prepared for this to be a fluid experience where things often have to change on the fly so we can get our surfers on the best waves possible with safety always being our top priority.
More details to come in the next few days.
