The Coaches and Board Members of The Half Moon Bay Surf Team are parents of our surfers and other dedicated community members who volunteer their time to help encourage the youth of the coastside to get in the water, show up, and be kind.

JASON STARK- HEAD COACH, HIGH SCHOOL VARSITY

When and where did you start surfing? The Half Moon Bay Jetty, 1994

Favorite wave you've ever surfed? A right hand sandy point called Punta Conejo in Salina Cruz, Mexico. 

Dream surf trip? Indonesia by boat with two surf buddies and my family in tow. Probably starting down in Bali and make it up to the Mentawais.

Favorite thing about surfing? Aside from being immersed in nature, it allows you to live in the present. You don't think about your mortgage or any land based stresses when you getting barreled or hitting the lip. It clears your mind so to speak.

Favorite thing about being involved with The Half Moon Bay Surf Team? Sharing my quarter century of surf wisdom with the youth. It's very rewarding. I also like the many different characters. They make me laugh and keep me feeling young.

GENE LINDSEY, HIGH SCHOOL VARSITY ASSISTANT COACH

When and where did you start surfing? The Jetty, 1984. I grew up right across the highway in El Granada.

Favorite wave you've ever surfed? Anywhere a good sand bar sets up that no one knows about. Rincon is pretty awesome too, but getting it good without a crowd is pretty rare.

Dream surf trip? Somewhere tropical with no one surfing but the friends and family I'm traveling with.

Favorite thing about surfing? The joy and happiness it brings me.

Favorite thing about being involved with The Half Moon Bay Surf Team? I really like passing on my knowledge of surfing to the younger generation. Knowledge unshared is wasted.

When and where did you start surfing? Grew up boogie boarding through high school, then stopped for many years. Started surfing in 2012 here on the coast.

Favorite wave you've ever surfed? Hanalei Bay on Kauai

Dream surf trip? Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, Mexico. Right hand point break paradise.

Favorite thing about surfing? Speed and the beauty of being in the ocean.

Favorite thing about being involved with The Half Moon Bay Surf Team? Seeing the kids smiles and their rapid improvement, along with the San Onofre trip.

Dream surf trip? Family trip to warm waters...anywhere!

Favorite thing about surfing? Being in the water. Getting scared. Getting stoked.

When and where did you start surfing? Virginia Beach and Outerbanks NC, 1987

Favorite wave you've ever surfed? Keramas, Bali on a trip with the Marine Corps.

Dream surf trip? Tour the East Coast of Australia starting on the Sunshine Coast and ending at Bells.

Favorite thing about surfing? The anticipation and prospect of getting good waves, and the satisfaction on the rare occasion that I surf a wave well!

Favorite thing about being involved with The Half Moon Bay Surf Team? Seeing the progression in the young surfers and hopefully igniting a lifelong passion (addiction!).

MARCUS CHAIT, BOARD MEMBER- PRESIDENT

When and where did you start surfing? Lahaina Harbor, Maui, 2012. Oddly enough, I retired from surfing on that same trip.

Favorite wave you've ever surfed? See above.

Dream surf trip? My kids tell me it should be Kandui Villas in The Mentawais.

Favorite thing about surfing? Being a surf fan rather than a surfer, I've come to realize that this is without a doubt the most challenging sport in the world, and watching these athletes overcome the challenges that the ocean throws at them is truly remarkable. And the people couldn't be more mellow or fun to be around.

Favorite thing about being involved with The Half Moon Bay Surf Team? Watching the kids enjoying their time in the ocean together while pushing one another to get better and better every session.
